One feature of our automated manuscript scoring system, measures books against the ideal writing standard set out in James V. Smith Jr's Fiction Writer's Brainstormer. The following ranges were derived from a popular post by Science Fiction writer Michael A. BurnStein who analyzed the book. It was found that most successful published works fell within the following thresholds:

  • No more than 4.25 characters per word.
  • No more than 5% passive voice.
  • No less than an 80% readability on the Flesch Reading Ease scale.
  • A Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level between 4-6.
